Cable assemblies and wiring harnesses remain at the heart of WH Kemp. Over many years, customers have also asked us to take responsibility for a broader part of their product manufacture, from electro-mechanical sub-assemblies and control equipment to complete machines, instruments and finished products.
Our contract electrical manufacturing service is best suited to products with significant electrical or electro-mechanical content that can be manufactured to established drawings, bills of materials, specifications and testing procedures.
Where Our Expertise Adds Value
Before accepting a project, our New Product Introduction team assesses its technical requirements, production volumes, sourcing needs, equipment and space requirements, and whether it is a good fit for our capabilities. We focus on products where our electrical manufacturing experience can add genuine value.
Working Alongside Your Engineers
Our team works with your engineers to understand the product, its materials, assembly sequence, workmanship requirements, testing, packaging and documentation. Where helpful, customer engineers spend time at our Westbury factory working directly with our team as the manufacturing process is established.
We then develop a controlled and repeatable production method, supported by appropriate work instructions, quality documentation, tooling and test equipment. Materials can be customer-supplied, purchased selectively by WH Kemp, or sourced as a complete bill of materials.
Build-to-Print Manufacturing
Our contract manufacturing work is principally build to print. The customer retains ownership and control of the product design, while WH Kemp takes responsibility for manufacturing consistently to the agreed documentation and quality requirements.
We identify potential production difficulties and discuss them with your engineers, but do not make unapproved changes to the design or specification. Any proposed alteration is referred back to the customer for review and authorisation.
From Cable Assembly to Complete Product
Many projects develop naturally from existing cable assembly relationships. Once a customer has confidence in our workmanship, communication and delivery, they may ask us to incorporate assemblies into a larger unit or take responsibility for additional stages of manufacture.
- Purchasing and materials management
- Cable assembly and wiring
- Mechanical and electro-mechanical assembly
- Soldering to PCBs and component integration
- Programming and configuration to customer instructions
- Functional testing using agreed procedures
- Labelling and product identification
- Final inspection and quality documentation
- Packaging and preparation for delivery
The exact scope is agreed for each project. Customers can retain responsibility for specialist elements or free-issue parts while outsourcing the activities that fit most effectively within our facilities.
Our Contract Manufacturing Experience
Our experience includes manufacturing specialist product-testing equipment for a major UK consumer products company. The customer’s engineers create the initial design and prototype before working with our team to establish sourcing, assembly, testing and repeat-production methods. WH Kemp then manufactures the equipment for use within the customer’s international production facilities.
After initially supplying cable assemblies incorporating GSM antennas and connections to PCBs, we were asked to undertake the complete assembly of vehicle-tracking instruments, including programming, testing, final packaging and coordinating delivery to distributors.
